It's Not Our Thing

By Jim Williams

Editor's Note: We all have thoughts — some good - some bad, but nonetheless they are thoughts. Our thoughts should be reflected upon and dealt with biblically (Rom. 12:1-3; Gal. 6:3; Phil. 3:12-17; Phil. 4:8-9; 2 Pet. 3:1, etc.). ‘Just Thinkin Out Loud' (spelling of ‘thinkin'' is purposeful) is a series of thoughts that are being made public. You may or may not agree with all of the thoughts you read in this series, but it will help all of us to discuss them — out loud. The hope of the author and editors at IIIM is that this will assist all of us to begin personal reflection upon our own thoughts and compare them with God's perspective in Holy Scripture. Readers are encouraged to use small discussion groups and/or our RPM forum for any irenic discussion(s) of these specific thoughts and others they may bring about.
There have to be generations upon generations of people who think Jesus really blew it when He did not go immediately to the side of Lazarus to heal him when He heard Lazarus was ill. I mean look at it, the reputation of Jesus as healer. Surely He would scurry to the side of his friend to keep him out of the grave. But no, He didn't. He just went about business as usual and took care of Lazarus on His own time, in His own way. Lazarus died, but he walked again.

And then, in Mark there was this time when, instead of a stroll around the Sea of Galilee, Jesus brings up the wise idea of a shortcut trip via boat. Jesus was quite tired, so he made like a Greyhound bus passenger, leaving the driving to others while He went to sleep in the back. He had said, "lets go to the other side." Well, that's ok, they thought so they took Him along in their boat and proceeded to cross the Sea. But there was a storm on the way, and it was like a hurricane. Wind was blowing, and the waves were crashing into the boat. Annoyed that their esteemed passenger was oblivious to all of this, they yelled at Jesus "Master don't you care that we are drowning?" Well, he took care of that situation, and then got upset with his disciples because, though they thought they knew fully who He was, they really didn't.

It is not up to us to tackle the issues of life with a plastic Jesus on the dashboard like he was a good luck charm or a magician. It is up to us to get to know Him like He really is, Lord of all. It's just our appointed duty to trust and obey what He says. We should keep it in mind that, even though we are going through the storms, he started us out on our own particular route saying, "Let us go to the other side." He always knew we'd get there — as He is Lord and the Sovereign.

Tell me what you think, I'm just thinkin out loud!
